Anyone who has seen the news about coal seam gas in the Eastern States, or seen the Oscar-nominated US documentary Gasland will know just how damaging the gas fracking industry has been in other parts of the world.
But if you think gas fracking is not happening in WA, think again.
Gas fracking involves pumping a cocktail of highly carcinogenic and toxic chemicals deep underground at extreme pressure in order to fracture rocks and release natural gas. Where this has occurred in the Eastern States and the USA it has resulted in groundwater aquifers permanently contaminated with toxic chemicals and gasses.
The bad news is that the gas fracking industry is already active here with no enforceable controls to protect the environment or our groundwater.
It’s hard to believe, but the WA EPA has refused to assess the environmental impacts of gas fracking, and the gas companies are refusing to release any information about what chemicals are being pumped underground. The Department of Mines and Petroleum is actively facilitating gas fracking despite a recent review finding that they are comprehensively failing to manage the environmental impacts of the mining industry and lack the legal powers to enforce environmental conditions placed on fracking operations.
We have already had one case where over a million litres of diesel were pumped at high pressure underground in the environmentally sensitive Whicher Ranges near Busselton, and recently, the possibility of a US-style fracking ‘frenzy’ in WA was reported in the media.
We need an immediate moratorium on gas fracking in WA to protect our precious groundwater and ecosystems from this damaging industry.
Add your support to this action calling for an immediate moratorium on gas fracking in WA until we have regulations that can guarantee full protection for groundwater, human health and the environment.
