Western Australians are getting into Conservation Week 2012 in a big way, with the first of more than 45 events state wide launching today.
Conservation Week is organised by the Conservation Council of WA, Western Australia’s peak environmental organisation. Now in its seventh year, Conservation Week is WA’s largest community focussed environmental event and celebrates WA’s unique and diverse places, plants and animals.
This year the focus is on WA’s threatened wildlife and what people can do to prevent the extinction of some of our biggest icons.
Conservation Council of WA spokesperson John McCarten said, “Time is running out for WA’s iconic numbats, cockatoos and other threatened wildlife. This Conservation Week, we encourage all West Australians to get together with your friends, family and neighbours to celebrate WA’s unique wildlife and help end extinction.
“Tonight you can find out about one of the biggest new threats to the environment in WA at a film screening in Northbridge, help support wildlife rescuers at a gala cocktail party in East Perth or check out the threatened wildlife in your own neighbourhood in Gosnells and Joondalup.
“There are events all over the state, including more than a dozen this weekend alone. All you have to do to find out what’s happening near you is visit ccwa.org.au/conservationweek and enter your postcode. We’ll show you everything listed in your neighbourhood and make planning a fun weekend that much easier.”
Today’s Conservation Week activities include:
- A Northbridge screening of Gaslands, the anti-fracking hit film that which is making waves all over the world.
- Guided ‘night stalks’ in Joondalup and Gosnells, where locals can discover the rare plants and animals living right under their noses.
- A cocktail evening and art auction in East Perth supporting The Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, a Lesmurdie-based not-for-profit committed to the rehabilitation, protection and welfare of native wildlife.
- Kid-friendly activities at our all-day stall in the Murray Street Mall.
