Our precious groundwater is under threat from a cocktail of chemicals
As I’m sure you know, here in WA we’re totally dependent on natural groundwater supplies which cannot be replaced if they’re polluted by mining processes such as gas fracking.
Gas fracking involves pumping a cocktail of highly carcinogenic and toxic chemicals deep underground at extreme pressure in order to fracture coal seams or other rocks and release natural gas.
Anyone who has seen the news about coal seam gas in the Eastern States, or seen the Oscar-nominated US documentary Gasland will know just how damaging the gas fracking industry has been in other parts of the world.
But if you think gas fracking is not happening in WA, think again.
Help us protect our precious groundwater from the toxic gas fracking industry by making a tax-deductible donation here.
We have already had one case where over a million litres of diesel were pumped at high pressure down a gas well in the environmentally sensitive Whicher Ranges near Busselton, and recently, a senior WA government official spoke about the possibility of a US-style fracking ‘frenzy’ in WA.
The bad news is that the gas fracking industry is already active here and the State Government and EPA
are turning a blind eye to its impacts. It’s hard to believe, but the WA EPA has refused to regulate the environmental impacts of gas fracking, and the gas companies are refusing to release any information about what chemicals are being pumped underground.
CCWA has already called for a moratorium on fracking in WA and we have initiated legal action, but we need your help to take this further.
Last year the Queensland Conservation Council successfully campaigned to see some of the cancer-causing chemicals used in gas fracking banned after they were found in groundwater. In New South Wales, the government has also been forced to place a moratorium on gas fracking.
These gains have been achieved by communities standing up for what they believe in, but right now there is no organised public campaign against gas fracking in WA. We urgently need your help to change this.
Your tax deductible donation will enable us to establish a community campaign against gas fracking, challenge the industry with legal action and expose the impacts of fracking by mobilising our network of citizen scientists.
If the gas fracking industry becomes established in WA, our precious groundwater could end up permanently contaminated. We need your urgent help now to stop this from happening.
