Bauxite mining threatens forests
A new company is trying to get a foothold in WA's South-West. Bauxite Resources Limited has applied for exploration licences covering 23,000km2 of State forest and conservation reserves and private property. it has begun a public relations campaign to achieve it object of mining, refining and exporting three million tonnes of bauxite a year. This is a serious threat to both our jarra and karri forests.
Despite strong opposition from conservation groups in the 1970's and early 80's, Alcoa and Worsley Alumina are firmly established in the jarrah forest for the next 35 years, and both have approval to expand their operations.
The Worsley expansion is already under way. WA's south-west and the forests in particular cannot sustain any additional assault in the form of more bauxite mining.
CCWA is working closely with local groups and communities to keep BRL out of our forests. Visit www.NoMining.com and http://www.4r4.com to see what local groups are doing.
